Mailing/Shipping Helpful Tips
- Advise family and friends to never send cash or gift cards in the mail. Doing so will be at the risk of the sender. Items of importance, for example laptops, birth certificates, bank cards, tickets, checks, etc. should always be sent as accountable mail that includes a tracking number.
- Refrain from shipping/ordering perishable items as there are no provisions to ensure timely deliveries. The university cannot be responsible for damages associated with delivery delays.
- Letter Mail should not contain items that could injure employees and/or result in damage to processing equipment. Examples include pens/pencils, pins, metal, paper clips, etc. Mail should not be stapled to the envelope.
- When packing items, ensure items are secure. Anything organic should be in a sealed container. Wrap fragile items extremely well and fill any empty spaces with packing fill materials such as paper or packing peanuts. Use sturdy boxes/packaging especially for heavy items.
- Packages arriving open to the facility will be refused for the safety of students and employees.
- Always include a return address on all letter mail and packages, should the mail/package need to be returned.
- The Howard University student’s registered name must be on the package or on the mail. Do not include nicknames, mother or father, or incomplete names on the package or mail.
- Packages retrieved by a person other than the addressee’s name should be authorized in advance via an email from the addressee.
- For successful delivery, the package must include your residence hall's name, address, and room number. Do not put the 10th Street mailroom location. This will delay or prevent your package from being received at your residence hall. All couriers have been instructed to bring the packages to the mail service center for delivery to the respective residence hall.
