Licenses & Royalties

Listed below are the types of Howard licensing categories available.  The advance fees are generally based on the type of product category(s) for which a company intends to obtain a license.  The royalty rate is 9%.

Standard Licensing Program

For production of emblematic merchandise to be sold by an individual or company at retail.

  • $1,000 application fee.
  • $1,000 annual administrative fee.

Category A

  • For higher volume, higher priced items such as apparel, headwear, balls, footwear, and health & beauty products.
  • $500 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

Category B

  • For other non-apparel items of lower volume and cost.
  • $250 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

Category C

  • For special circumstances and limited situations, including handmade and crafter type products.
  • $100 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

Internal Campus Supplier Program*

License is for internal suppliers; products sold to the institution for internal consumption only and cannot be resold by restricted licensees.

  • $100 application fee.
  • $100 annual administrative fee
  • Advance fee waived, Exempt from reporting royalties

*CLC changed the name of this program from Restricted Licensing Program effective (July 1, 2011). 

Local Licensing Program

For local companies and/or individuals.  Geographically confined to in-state or "local region" companies that intend to make products for resale.

  • $100 application fee.
  • $100 annual administrative fee.

Category A

  • For higher volume, higher priced items such as apparel, headwear, balls, footwear, and health & beauty products.
  • $500 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

Category B

  • For other non-apparel items of lower volume and cost.
  • $250 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

Category C

  • For special circumstances and limited situations, including handmade and crafter type products.
  • $100 Advance fee, Report royalties quarterly

 

Weapons/firearms, tobacco products or alcoholic beverages are not appropriate items for licensing. Other products will be considered; however, the University has the right to decline any item.

To obtain an Howard license or to get more information, please contact CLC. Once a license has been given, CLC will provide the Howard approved artwork.
